Announcing Interim President Tommy Williams

Howdy Aggies,

Today, The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents appointed former System Vice Chancellor for Government Relations and proud Aggie Tommy Williams ’78 as Interim President of Texas A&M University. Tommy will serve in this role while the Board conducts a careful national search for the next permanent president.

Why this matters: Periods of transition can create uncertainty, but they also offer clarity of purpose. Our mission and our values—Excellence, Integrity, Leadership, Loyalty, Respect and Selfless Service—remain constant. Tommy’s charge as Interim President is straightforward: provide stability, listen to our community, and support all of you while keeping Texas A&M moving forward.

What you can expect in the coming weeks

  • Stability and Continuity: Academic programs, research, student services, and campus operations remain on course.
  • Listening and Engagement: Interim President Williams will begin a listening tour with faculty, staff and students, and meetings with key faculty, staff, student, college/school, division and affiliate leadership teams.
  • Transparency: We will provide periodic updates on the presidential search, including key milestones and opportunities for input.
  • Student Focus: Continued emphasis on student success and opportunity, including career readiness, affordability efforts, and student support services.
  • Research Momentum: Ongoing support for cutting-edge research that benefits Texas, the nation, and the world.

As we prepare to celebrate Texas A&M’s 150th year, we’re reminded that this university has endured and thrived through every kind of change. With your support and engagement, we will be just as strong for the next 150.

Thank you for everything you do for Texas A&M.

Gig ’em,

Glenn Hegar
Chancellor, The Texas A&M University System
